When Coilmind is not for you
I would rather you didn’t buy Coilmind than buy it, find out in week three that it can’t do the thing you needed, and ask for your money back. So here is the list of situations where the answer is no — written by the person who would have taken your money.
If none of these describe you, the trial will tell you the rest in an afternoon.
You’re not on Windows, or not on TIA Portal V17–V21
The Openness API is Windows-bound, so there is no Mac or Linux version and there isn’t going to be one. V16 and older aren’t supported either. This is the one item on the page with no workaround at all.
Your bottleneck is hardware, not code
Devices and modules, SINAMICS drive parameters, motors and encoders, PROFINET, ECAD-to-project generation — Coilmind does none of it and isn’t planning to. If most of your week goes into configuring hardware rather than writing logic, it will sit idle. The Siemens Eigen Engineering Agent covers that ground; that comparison is a page of its own.
You need HMI devices created, or faceplate types
Coilmind does build HMI: screens, screen items, dynamizations, and the tags and tag tables behind them, plus a proper script editor with IntelliSense. What it will not do is add the HMI device itself — you create the panel in TIA, it works inside it. Faceplate types are beyond every tool in this category, Coilmind included: the Openness API cannot create them.
Nothing from your project may reach a model — ever
Be careful how you read the offline story. With the cloud model, the relevant part of your project does leave your PC — anyone telling you otherwise about a cloud-model tool is describing their control plane, not your data. You can switch it off: run a local model and nothing leaves the machine. But local models are weaker than cloud ones, how capable depends on your GPU, and the licence carries a 14-day offline grace period — within those two weeks it needs a short connection to refresh. If your requirement is a machine that never touches a network again, no part of this product meets it. The templater and the generator are genuinely model-free, but the licence still comes due.
You need style-guide enforcement across a large codebase
Mass adaptations across dozens of blocks, conformance checking against a written standard, automatic project documentation — that’s tooling for an organisation that has a standard on paper. Coilmind is built around what one engineer does in a week.
You have more than a handful of engineers
One licence covers several machines and several of you can work at once — the ceiling is requests per minute, not named seats. That’s generous for two or three people and wrong for fifteen. Past that, volume pricing and procurement matter more than the terms Coilmind competes on, and vendors built for that will serve you better.
You need a support organisation
There isn’t one. If something breaks you email me and I answer, usually the same day, and that is the whole arrangement. For some buyers that’s the best part of this page. If your procurement needs an SLA with a company behind it, it’s a dealbreaker, and it should be.
You want code you don’t have to review
Blocks are gated on a real compile — if it doesn’t build, the change isn’t applied — logic can be validated before it is written at all, blocks and HMI screens are snapshotted first, and everything is listed in a changelog. Two honest gaps: tag, tag-table and UDT operations have neither a snapshot nor a compile gate, and none of it makes generated logic correct for your machine. It is reviewed by a qualified engineer before it runs, and it is not for safety-critical functions. If you were hoping to skip that step, no tool on this market can give you what you want yet.
